The Vallejo Choral Society (VCS) seeks a Director to lead its Campanelli Youth Chorus class beginning in
September 2024. Sponsored by VCS and administered by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD), the weekly after-school class provides an enriching choral education and performance experience to school-age children throughout Solano County and beyond. The class inspires and empowers students to find their voices and develop a deep appreciation for music and its power to lift the human spirit.

The Campanelli Youth Chorus class offers a solid foundation in the choral arts, including musicianship,
sight singing, and pitch and vocal training. The class engenders enthusiasm for music making and
introduces students to a wide range of choral repertoire. Open to students ages 7 through 17, the class may be divided by age group, depending on enrollment, to present the appropriate level of instruction.

Director Responsibilities

  • Prepare and lead the weekly, 60-90-minute youth chorus class for mixed-age youth (ages 7 to 17)
  • Work collaboratively with the VCS Artistic Director to formulate a one-year programming plan
  • Develop engaging class plans that integrate elements of musicianship, sight singing, pitch and vocal training, healthy vocal technique, resonance, breathing, vowel formation, and performance
  • Serve as a non-voting ex-officio member of the VCS Board of Directors and advise on issues related to youth choral performance, preparation, and production.

Director Qualifications

  • Excellent musicianship and ability to play and accompany on the piano
  • Solid understanding of vocal production, vocal pedagogy, and rehearsal techniques
  • Wide knowledge of choral repertoire suitable for beginning to intermediate level singers
  • Ability to inspire through contagious enthusiasm
  • Bachelor’s degree in music education and 1+ year of professional experience

Vallejo Choral Society

VCS’s role as program sponsor begins with sourcing a talented professional music educator to lead the class and extends to curriculum input, recital support, and financial supplementation. In addition, VCS may offer opportunities for the youth chorus to perform at VCS concerts. GVRD’s role as administrator includes hosting the class at one of its community centers and managing student enrollment and tuition payments.

The Campanelli Youth Chorus Director serves under contract with the VCS Board of Directors and in
collaboration with the VCS Artistic Director. This is a part-time position; compensation is $150 per
60-90-minute class, with ~12 classes per session. The selectee must provide proof of legal eligibility to
work in the United States. The Vallejo Choral Society is an equal-opportunity employer.

Application Process

Applicants may submit a cover letter and résumé to Vallejo Choral Society by May 6, 2024, via email to
info@vallejochoral.org. Candidates may be asked to submit references and video samples. Selected
candidates will be invited to interview with the Search Committee, and a selection will be made in June.
