The centerpiece of the Gala Concert is Dr. Adolphus Hailstork’s I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes, a gripping cantata for tenor soloist, chorus, and piano. Written primarily in call-and-response texture, the tenor soloist leads the chorus through three Psalm texts (121, 13, and 23), telling a nuanced story of resilience for those who may be adrift or wrapped in moments of darkness and doubt. The triumph of affirmed faith wins out in the end through a final stately “Alleluia” in a major mode. The remaining titles on the program speak to this same journey and finding the strength to move through times of trouble.
